Net wall area: 12.40 m²
Area including 10.0% allowance: 13.64 m²
Each sheet covers 2.880 m²
Sheet orientation, framing layout, joints, offcuts, fire or moisture ratings, and local requirements are not determined.

How to use this calculator
- Enter the labelled values and review the live result.
- Review the live result and use Copy result when you need to share it.
How the calculation works
Openings are subtracted from wall area, the allowance is added, and the result is divided by one sheet's area.
Formula
Sheets = ceil(((wall area − openings) × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ sheet area)
Step-by-step calculation
- Enter the labelled values and review the live result.
- Openings are subtracted from wall area, the allowance is added, and the result is divided by one sheet's area.
- Check the displayed result, then copy it if needed.
Worked example
A 6 m by 2.4 m wall with 2 m² of openings and standard 1,200 mm by 2,400 mm sheets can be estimated before layout.
Methodology and review
Who this is for
People estimating sheets for simple rooms.
Inputs and units
- Wall and ceiling dimensions
- Openings
- Sheet size
- Waste
Method
Wall and ceiling areas are totalled, openings removed, waste added, and the result divided by sheet face area before rounding up.
Worked example
A 48 m² surface using 2.88 m² sheets needs 17 sheets before waste and rounding.
Assumptions
- Surfaces and sheets are rectangular.
- The same sheet size applies throughout.
Common mistakes
- Counting openings twice
- Ignoring sheet orientation and framing
Limitations
- Offcuts, orientation, fire or moisture ratings, framing layout, and local rules are excluded.
- A qualified project professional should confirm specification.
How this tool was checked
Tests check surface totals, opening subtraction, waste, sheet area, and rounding.

Risk guidance
A simple area estimate
The estimate subtracts openings from one rectangular wall and divides the adjusted area by the selected sheet size. It does not optimise the cut layout.
Specification and layout still matter
Sheet orientation, framing centres, joints, layers, fire resistance, moisture exposure, edge support, and offcuts affect the actual number and type of sheets.
