How the calculation works

Floor area plus the selected allowance is divided by the area of one tile, and the count is rounded up.

Tiles = ceil((length × width × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ tile area)

  1. Enter the labelled values and review the live result.
  2. Floor area plus the selected allowance is divided by the area of one tile, and the count is rounded up.

Worked example

A 5 m by 4 m floor using 600 mm by 300 mm tiles with 10% allowance requires 123 tiles.

Methodology and review

Who this is for

People estimating pieces for a rectangular floor.

Inputs and units

  • Room dimensions
  • Tile or board dimensions
  • Waste allowance

Method

Floor area is divided by one tile or board's face area, then the selected cutting allowance is added and rounded up to whole pieces.

Worked example

A 20 m² floor using 0.25 m² tiles needs 80 tiles before waste.

Assumptions

  • The floor is rectangular and product dimensions are nominal face dimensions.
  • The allowance covers a simple layout.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing millimetres and metres
  • Ignoring pattern and cuts

Limitations

  • Patterns, irregular edges, matching batches, breakage, and cartons affect ordering.
  • Confirm pack coverage and installer recommendations.

Risk guidance

Area and whole-tile rounding

The floor area and allowance are divided by one tile's face area. The result rounds up to a whole tile, but does not account for how tiles are packed or sold.

Plan the actual layout

Room shape, pattern, grout lines, borders, cuts, matching batches, breakage, and spare stock affect ordering. Check the layout and supplier pack quantity.
