Wi-Fi Throughput Estimator

Use this wi-fi throughput estimator entirely in your browser.

ResultEstimated usable throughput: 660 Mbps

Equal-share estimate: 110 Mbps per active device.

Real throughput varies with signal, interference, protocol overhead, and device capability.

Calculations happen locally in your browser.

Why Wi-Fi PHY speed is not file-transfer speed

Advertised PHY rate is a signalling rate. Airtime contention, half-duplex operation, channel width, signal quality, retransmissions, protocol overhead, access-point capability, and client radios all affect usable throughput. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the labelled values and review the live result.
  2. Review the live result and use Copy result when you need to share it.

How the calculation works

Advertised PHY rate is multiplied by a user-selected efficiency estimate, then divided across active devices.

Formula

Advertised PHY rate is multiplied by a user-selected efficiency estimate, then divided across active devices.

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Enter the labelled values and review the live result.
  2. Advertised PHY rate is multiplied by a user-selected efficiency estimate, then divided across active devices.
  3. Check the displayed result, then copy it if needed.

Worked example

A 1,200 Mbps link at 55% efficiency estimates 660 Mbps aggregate throughput.

Methodology and review

Who this is for

Home and office users estimating usable Wi-Fi speed.

Inputs and units

  • Negotiated link rate
  • Efficiency
  • Sharing allowance

Method

The selected Wi-Fi link rate is reduced by the entered efficiency and shared-device allowance to estimate usable application throughput.

Worked example

A 600 Mbps link at 60% efficiency estimates 360 Mbps before further sharing.

Assumptions

  • The link rate is already negotiated between one client and access point.
  • Efficiency summarises protocol and environmental losses.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing link rate with internet plan speed
  • Ignoring shared airtime

Limitations

  • Walls, interference, channel width, client capability, backhaul, and contention vary continuously.
  • This is a planning estimate, not a coverage survey.

How this tool was checked

Fixtures verify percentage reductions and bit/byte display conversions at representative link rates.
